Hey all...just was curious on how we all feel about the use of abbreviations. These include v*, d*, n*, sv* s*, or nv*.
To some, just the mere sight of these words or reading them in their minds could make them feel unwell or queasy. To others, they are a pain in the ass to type out (I hate typing the word for d* myself as I almost always get it wrong) And to others, it does not matter.
For me, I personally feel like keeping these words hidden could be hindering progress and making us fear them even more. However I don't want to be insensitive to you guys, as we are all here to support one another.
What are your thoughts on this issue?

It is the individual's choice to use abbreviations or not. To expose myself to the words, because they do trigger me, I made an account on Quizlet and made a flash card that is hidden to the public. On the "term" side I have the abbreviation with the full amount of *'s (ex. v****) and on the "definition" side I have the full word. I added real words and slang words so that I am exposed to all. It gives me a controlled environment to help myself not be triggered by them.
I can't spell d* either lol!

I personally think they just keep the fear going, but I remember that they definitely increased my anxiety when I was in a worse place. I use them most of the time just because I want to make sure people don't go beyond their anxiety threshold.
Although I do like to type them! I love spelling, and for some reason the very words that mean things I am terrified of, are some of the most fun words to spell.

I just abbreviate because I remember other webpages requesting people do so. I also can't spell d* to save my life haha.

Thanks for the replies, guys. I sometimes automatically type out "sick" or other words (execpt d*, lol!)
Jess - that is an awesome idea! I try to be sensitive for those who struggle a lot or are early in their progress, I try not to assume everyone is comfy. Koiz - I agree that they do make it more difficult if you're in a bad place. If I am already feeling unwell, reading those words almost heightens my gross feeling. Like, I don't need this too! Hah. dragonfly - I see both ways, I know on a few mods tried to get people away from the habit because they felt it hindered progress.
We could probably swing using words on a regular basis if there were a more progressive type forum or thread for those who are trying to get more exposure, so they'd know what they were getting into. As far as general forums, I'd probably abbreviate certain words like v* or d* but keep using "virus" or "sick" as full words.

I can spell all of the words, including D*, but I feel like it is a trigger for some. It was for me a few years ago. Today, it makes me uncomfortable, but I am so used to doing the * that I prefer it more.
