Hey all,
First off, I am so grateful for this fallback supportive website. I get major anxiety about v* and noro* over the winter season and this season my anxiety has been particularly bad for a variety of reasons....
I traveled to Southeast Asia with my partner's family and returned about a week ago. The whole time I was there I was SOO paranoid about coming down with a food borne illness and I was having such a hard time remaining calm. Especially because sooo many people who have travleled to that area before would say things like "getting sick is part of the experience!" or simply "the reality is, you'll probably get sick". My partner' family would seriously joke about who was going to v* from the food first. Needless to say that was WAY outside my comfort zone. However, to my surprise, I never got sick. I was meticulously careful, so I guess it paid off. So after all that anxiety being pent up for nearly 2 and a half weeks, I come back to the states and I'm feeling so relieved and grateful. BUT! That relief was so short lived....Let me explain...
This past weekend I took a trip to my old college town to attend a going away party for a friend. I had a great weekend and enjoyed spending time with everyone. Then today I get a text from a friend asking, "Did you guys get sick last night? I spent the whole night with V* and D* and I'm barely feeling better". This also happened to be a friend who we drove back into our hometown with...who I shared food with, and I even remember touching his cell phone a bunch as we were sharing photos. He went on to tell me that something "must be going around" because someone got sick there the first night (Friday) with what seemed like the stomach flu. I had NO idea, and I used the bathroom and used the communal hand soap (which is something I NEVER do), helped with dishes at the house and ate food with my fingers. I really let me guard down and I'm FREAKING out. Had I known someone had been violently ill a couple nights prior, I would have taken all the precautions but I had no idea. I had a hotel room, but I spent A LOT of time at that infected house. Now I am in full blown panic mode, and I'm trying to figure out how I can reduce my risk. The good news is I didn't get sick last night, but I'm scared for tonight and the following.
Once you've been that exposed, is there even anything you can do to prevent the worst from happening? I am in desperate need of some support or advice. Thank you ALL.
