Hi guys, along with my phobia of being sick I also have a phobia of the dentist. Yep. Perfect! So, I am one of those people who avoids things in the hope they go away (I haven't been to the dentist in about 10 years, kill me). Anyways I finally plucked up enough courage to register and she said I would have a call back for an initial appointment in the next few weeks - this is all fine and I can probably deal with it. But, I am more worried about having to have a root canal and being allergic to the anaesthetic. Now there's nothing to say I will be, I've never had to have anything like this before but I've read stories of people getting sick or feeling n*. I am really panicked and it's putting me off going so much any help or kind words would be greatly appreciated. Anyone else also scared of the dentist?

I HATE the dentist!!!! Absolutely terrified to go! I ended up having tooth discomfort a year ago and had to go. They said I probably needed a root canal.. once they drilled down they decided to fill it with antibiotics first and then see if it gets better. (They knew how TERRIFIED I was about the root canal.. I think any other doctor would have just done the root canal).. thankfully two weeks later when I went back the antibiotic had helped so they just filled it in. It really helped my fear of going. It made me realize not all dentist are out for ya 😂.. Have you had any tooth discomfort? If you haven't, then I'm sure you are 100% fine!! And be honest with them about your fear of the dentist.. I think they hear it a lot and so they'll be extra gentle with you!

This is what I am unsure of. Until I actually started talking about the dentist and thinking about it yesterday. Everything was fine. I had no pain. It's only since I have been worrying 😭 now the pain has come! I am truly terrified I don't think I can have one if they tell me I need one I will just never be able to go back. Did they put you under anaesthetic to do the antibiotic?

They gave me a few shots in my gums but that was it! It didn't cause any n! I bet you that you just have a sensitive tooth! Pick up some sensadyne and apply it on that tooth. I bet it goes away 😊

I get anxiety n* at the dentist. It was really helpful to express to my dentist how I was feeling how nervous I was - I also have a quick gag reflex and a small mouth so when they get the tools in there things get stressful. But the last two visits I had were great, well... as great as getting cavities filled can be haha. I would just raise my hand a little if I needed a moment to just breathe and if they couldn't stop in the middle of what they were doing my dentist guided me through deep breathing through my nose. Definitely express your worries to your dentist, it's so rare to be allergic to the anesthetic too. I like to think of it as when we find stories like that on the internet, it's because we're searching for that specifically and of course someones going to share that story. People are less likely to share that all was fine and boring, they have to share their misery for us to get worried over

Not as much scared of the dentist as the orthodontist! I'm terrified every time because I hate getting the molds. Which I've only had to have once (and it actually wasn't bad I didn't gag at all). But I fear each time I go in that I will have to mold for my retainer - I'm getting my braces off soon so I'm expecting it any time now.
Just ask for laughing gas to calm you down. Once I was so anxious when I was younger at the dentist that they gassed me just to clean my teeth and do a bite wing X-ray! It didn't make me feel n* at all!! Just bring some water along with you to drink before and afterwards. It always helps my gag reflex.
Let your dentist know your fear. The more you communicate, the more they can help you be comfortable. If you don't say anything, they won't know anything is up. Good luck to you! I hope it's just a quick cleaning!!
