My husband and I are Christians and appreciate prayers before a meal, but our good friends AND his parents all hold hands and pray before meals. It makes me squirm every time... I know I've washed my hands thoroughly, but I don't know that the other two people on either side of me have at all! One is usually my husband and he doesn't wash them well at all. (Drives me crazy I yell at him all the time about it) I feel like I could quickly go "pee" right after prayer but doing that after each time people may start to wonder. Anyone else bothered by this?
I also HATE communion only because of all the people and germs... but I love what it means and want to participate. In church they make us shake everyone's hand around us and it freaks me out!
Mostly I hate being such a paranoid jerk about germs and illnesses!

Honestly what I would do is carry hand sanitizer in my pocket and quickly use it underneath the table after prayer. I know it's not as good as washing hands, but it is better than nothing!

Depending on how often you eat with certain people they may not actually take much notice if you go "pee" and wash your hands after prayer. You could also make that call based on what your eating... So if you'll be using utensils only and not actually touching your food it won't be as important to wash again. So you could just get up to pee and wash your hands when you're reading finger food and then it will be even less noticeable for others.
Then there are products such as the Zylast antiseptic gel which had supposedly shown to have "persistence" so that they will continue to kill germs on contact even after application. If you used something like that it may give you peace of mind.
And of course you could also do none of that and use these moments as building blocks for your recovery. Using it as a way to notice how you can hold someone's hand, then eat, and still not get sick. That reinforcement can help you feel more relaxed about the whole process in general.

I use hand sanitizer after all the hand shaking in church. I also dip my wafer in the cup, no way I am drinking from it!
