So for the past few days my anxiety has been getting worse. I'm on some new medication so this might be one of the side effects but it's still killing me. Anyways. I haven't been eating very much because of my anxiety. Things like toast and a few grapes at most every day, because my family refuses to let me go without eating. My parents are getting upset with me because I've been loosing weight and not eating much - they say that if I keep starving myself, I'm going to get more sick than I would if I was eating regularly.
So I ask you guys, are they right? Will me not eating eventually cause me to v*? And if that's the case, how does that work?
Also as a side note, today they forced me to eat some chicken. Now my stomach feels queasy and it's making me very scared. They're saying I feel this way because my guts "not used to having real food" just yet. I've done everything possible to not catch a bug (washing hands, Lysol, etc.) so I can't be sick right?

It's right for them to be worried, since as you can probably tell, starving yourself isn't very good for your body. But I can absolutely relate to the feeling of not wanting to eat anything because of the chance of v*. One of the physical side effects of living on no food is n*/v*, however you mentioned you do eat the bare minimum, so that would be rare. I'm no doctor, but I think organ failure may cause irregularities in the stomach for those who do not eat at all.
The chances of getting sick should be quite low, since you washed your hands before eating and were being careful about dirty surfaces. If the chicken was especially oily or spicy it might be that. I know there are certain foods I absolutely need to avoid. Hope you are feeling better!

I'm sorry to have to say this, I know how frustrating it is... but yes, they are right... You can v* from not eating and going without food for a while (even just a day) can cause severe nausea, anxiety, and even d*. Additionally, when you transition back to eating, you can be nauseated and/or have stomach ache/d* but! It'll be okay! Also, from my most recent time of being sick, I will say that it is much much much better to v* with something in your stomach than when empty. The second is truly awful.

I have been diagnosed with Anorexia because of this stupid fear. I got down to 89 pounds and after my doctor telling me to get into therapy and get my anxiety under control or I will be hospitalized! I try very very hard to make an attempt to eat at least one meal a day..sometimes I just cant and end up going 2 or 3 days without any food at all except a few crackers and coffee. I am up to 97 pounds now but don't forsee me gaining anymore weight because I have a fear of gaining weight too..if you want we can exchange emails and try to be of some better support to each other because clearly, our loved obes just don't understand.

Finally found this site after the other one being down for so long.
I was considered anorexic for a couple of years in high school because of my high anxiety and emetophobia. Lost a ton of weight and ended up in the eating disorder wing of the hospital.
I think what they mean is starving yourself is not healthy. Reeks havoc on your body and immune system so you are more susceptible to getting sick like colds flu etc. It can also damage your muscles and bones if gone on for too long.
My stomach is permanent messed up from what I did to my body in hs not to mention the cellulite I got on my.ass when gaining the weight back lol.
My suggestion talk to someone or get your anxiety under control and the eating will become easier.

Sorry to hear your anxiety is bad, I know the feeling where its so bad that you can't eat, but you need to try to. If you don't eat properly your immune system can go down and your more likely to get ill, whereas if you eat properly your less likely to get ill because your immune system will work properly to fight things off , if that make sense? And it can make you n* because if you go so long without eating it will cause acid . Your skin will be affected also. I know its probably not what you wanted to hear, but your parents are right

Your parents are absolutely right and you need to eat. I used to be like you and would go days at a time with minimal food intake. I felt nauseous every day and afraid of eating so i would just skip all of my meals except maybe a few crackers and a banana or some applesauce on occasion. I basically put myself on a limited BRAT diet even though I hadn't been sick. I figured if that's what you're supposed to eat after being sick then it would be the safest thing to eat in general.
Through a lot of hard work I forced myself back into regular eating habits. I even started eating breakfast every day for the first time since I was a small child. And believe it or not, my daily nausea decreased significantly. I could even go days or even a week or more without any nausea at all.
I like to remind myself that I'd like to avoid being sick but to do that I need to take care of my body and that means eating regularly and healthy, hydration, relaxation/rest, and physical activity/exercise. Depriving my body of any one of those is just going to affect my health and increase my chances of getting sick.
It's been about a year and a half for me eating regularly and I've still not been sick. The more time goes by and you haven't been sick from eating, the easier it gets.

I too have been diagnosed with anorexia and hospitalized to eating disorder wings three times. This happened after 12 years of emetophobia. Before my eating disorder started, I would starve myself since the age of seven because I thought I couldn't be sick if there was nothing in my stomach. So from a young age starving myself was my coping mechanism. I didn't realize how common this is among people like us.

I have also had this issue as well- I had an ED in my teenage years, coupled with emetophobia. I was treated for the ED, but I didn't realize I was an emet until a few years ago (I didn't even know there was such a thing- a random internet search lead me to the original site, and FINALLY everything made sense).
I still struggle with the ED sometimes. I really have to make a conscious effort to eat enough to keep my metabolism going. If you don't eat, you will have a lot of other physical symptoms that are unpleasant (digestive issues, energy/vitamin deficiencies, bloating/puffiness when you DO eat, etc.).
I know it's really hard, but try to eat some healthy foods- and make sure to include some calorie-dense (but still nutritious) foods, like peanut butter or avocados. I don't like that bloated/overly full feeling, so I try to make sure I have some higher calorie foods in my diet so I can have enough energy to exercise and feel well without eating a ton of food.
