I was last sick...: May 2014

Hey guys. So after reading some of today's threads I decided to do some research on sv* rates this year, and they have been up. It's making me really anxious, and I really don't want to go to school tomorrow because I'm afraid I'll get one. I know realistically you can't get a sv* unless you're in direct contact with someone who has one, but if all these people have gotten one, I could get one too. I hope knowing some of your experiences can help ease my anxiety.

Heya..I know your fears all too well and I know you're hoping to see lots of "nos" to this survey but the unfortunate thing is that many of us will see multiple people per season/year fall ill with these bugs....the good news is that does NOT under any circumstances mean that you will get ill!
We all are different and have different bodies with different immune systems. We all also have different habits and priorities as well as different jobs/hobbbies and lifestyles. Many of my friends who get ill either don't care much about getting sv* so they don't consider hygiene or practice good hand washing skills or they work around a lot of people and tend to not pay much mind to things as we all do. Some people are adventurous eaters and may eat something that is raw or handled by a recently ill person. Some people travel a lot and pick things up.
Case in point: I am an emet. I can count the number of sv* I have had in my life (I am currently 27) and my parents, my boyfriend and his parents can say they same. HOWEVER...I get colds at least 2, sometimes 3 times a year whereas some people are aghast by that. They turn into babies at the first sniffle whereas I endure these things 6 weeks out of my year. Same can be said for SV too. Some people are prone to it. Maybe it is in their genes...maybe they have weaker immune systems...maybe it is their stomach pH. A girlfriend of mine nearly fell over when I told her I had a 17 year break between v* episodes, whereas she v* from varying things almost monthly.
2013 was supposedly an AWFUL year for sv* because a new strain hit. In 2013 I was in college surrounded by people and I had 4 roommates, plus a boyfriend at the time who was, along with his roommate, very sloppy and un-hygienic. I also was in Philadelphia and NYC with several other schools along with thousands of people for different conferences in October and late November...prime SV season. And guess what? I never caught anything.
Please don't fear school just because of what should be a silly 2-day bug. The chances you'll get something are not as high as you'd think. Keep up the hand washing and be wary of sharing foods for the next couple of months but please do not let this fear control you.

Little extra story to add to Razzle's few:
I'm in high school now, and I've been sick only once since the summer before 2nd grade. That one time in between was in Feburary 2014... ironically, when I LEFT SCHOOL for a week (and I didn't catch it at school it was an epidemic in Germany at the time and everyone at my grandma's retirement home had it). That means that the one time (knock on wood) I've been sick in my entire Elementary, Middle, and High School life was when I was a full ocean away from school. I've also spent a fair amount of time in the clinic (I REALLY hated PE, thank goodness it's not required anymore once you become a junior). Not only have I spent 30+ minutes laying on the beds that sick people lay on, once I was waiting my turn to get my fever measured and a kid walked in with (graphic sorry) v all over his pants. Due to the clinic's strange layout, I'm talking ~2 feet away from me. I got out of there as fast as I could, but on my way to a bathroom to wash my hands I was trapped by a teacher that forced me to go and talk with her right away. I forgot that I hadn't washed my hands and didn't do so until I got home, a good 3+ hours later. And I didn't get sick!

Thanks so much guys. It's hard being at school, and I've been trying to avoid everyone. But honestly, I expected worse results from the poll, and I feel more hopeful now knowing that most people who answered only know one person who's had a sv* this year, considering that we all know hundreds of people that could get a sv* (especially with FB.) And wow, 17 years is a long time, as long as I've been alive! 😂 That definitely makes me feel more hopeful.

I always see a million billion people on my Facebook every year complaining of being ill. Every year it freaks me out and I'm consistently anxious for months. But I just sit and remind myself that it's pretty impossible to get sick unless I sit next to someone actively v*, or I put my hands in my mouth or don't wash my hands before eating. All of these things are avoidable, even at school. Most students have the common sense to run out of the room if they're really feeling bad, and then you just need to make sure you don't touch your face and wash your hands before eating and you're good! It may seem like the sv* is unavoidable but with proper care and hygiene you really decrease your chances immensely.
