Hi guys, I'm new here but, I am a bad emet. Don't actually remember the last time I v* it has genuinely been that long, I'm sure there have been times I've needed to but I guess I must have forced myself not to. Anyways, you can imagine that as it has been years, at least 15/16, I am terrified. I have never even v* from drinking too much like many other people do so my exposure to it is low and this makes my fear worse as I can't remember what it's like and I fear the worst etc.
Anyways, I live with two friends in a house with one bathroom, one of my friends has been away for 3 weeks and 3 days before she was meant to return (which is now tomorrow) she got a bad sv*, so bad she had to go to the hospital for dehydration etc where they told her it was fp*, this calmed me a little as I know it isn't contagious but since then she has said that maybe it is actually noro and now I am very panicked that I am going to contract it. I am very clean and paranoid about what I eat anyways but this is really not doing any good for my anxiety. My emet has actually turned me into a very bad agoraphobic meaning I find it hard to leave my house on a good day. My other housemate v* sometimes and I hate it, but, normally from drinking so I feel a little more confident about not contracting it from her I just feel n* whilst it's happening. I know many people would suggest I should go to a friends house but I fear not being here in case it isn't cleaned up properly. I probably sound crazy, she hasn't been sick since last night and won't be here until tomorrow afternoon but I am still paranoid. I don't know what to do. I want to cry, I cannot get sick.
I have been reading some comments on previous posts on here and it made me feel a little better for about 5 minutes. Now the creeping fear won't leave me and I don't know what to do.

Hello there! I can relate to your story quite a bit. Last year, my roommate caught SV and v*... Right in our room! The day after she moved in! It was awful, and she got so sick that she too had to be picked up, taken to the hospital, and then bought back. And guess what? I didn't get sick! I was worried for two days before I realized, nothing has happened. So I wanted to let you know it is possible to live with someone with an SV and not get sick! Wash your hands, and dont touch your face! If she was ill in the rest room, also try to grab some Lysol and some gloves and scrub down the bathroom, and the room if you share one. No sharing food or utensils. Do some breathing exercises too to warn off the panic! You will be fine!

I don't share a room with her, just a bathroom and I don't even know if she is still being sick but I am just paranoid all the time anyways Thank you for this. I don't really put my hands near my face anyways so hopefully I will come out of this feeling less anxious knowing I am clean enough to fight it off. My paranoid self is just worried I am not clean enough.

If the hospital have told her it's fp* I'm guessing they will have done tests to confirm that so if that's the case you will definitely be ok. If they haven't done any tests then they could probably just tell from her symptoms. I do believe the hospitals test for cases of Noro then send it to the lab to be confirmed but I could be wrong.
I do think you'll be ok though, just diluted bleach and hand washing etc.
I know there are a lot of Noro scare stories but I think Noro covers a lot of different sv*s from what I can gather. Also, people are quick to say they have had Noro regardless of whether it has been confirmed or not. There are tonnes of different causes for v* and/or d* bugs or no bugs and also viral and bacterial.
I was really poorly a few years ago (just d*) and it turns out I had compylobacter. To me it felt like I just had a normal bug but my husband was concerned about me as I was in pain so he rang the drs and they asked me to do a sample (yuck). Another time I had a rare reaction to acupuncture but I didn't realise until it happened again after my next session. Some people can have d* & v* and not spread it to anyone else. My friend and her partner had it over Christmas but their little girl didn't. Another friend (just d*) her partner and their son had it but their daughter didn't either. I had d* the week before Xmas, my husband just a gurgly tummy and my son nothing at all. Sometimes it affects only one person, I don't remember EVER passing any of my bugs on to my mum, dad or sister growing up and the same the other way. I asked my friend the other day if she has ever caught any bugs of her son (he's coming up 15) and she said no.
I genuinely think you'll be ok. Keep toothbrushes etc as far away from the loo as poss (in a cupboard even better) as I don't know whether your friend would flush with the lid down. Wipe over the loo, taps etc with diluted bleach after your friend has used the bathroom to be on the safe side.

Thanks Kirbear. I am already doing all of that and she isn't home yet, because I am so paranoid. She hasn't been sick for 2 days now (or so she has told me) but I am going to continue to be very careful just to be on the safe side.

Yes, if the hospital tested her they would have found bacteria in her stool to then diagnose her as food poisoning. That being said, remember that you can ONLY catch a bug IF AND ONLY IF you put dirty hands into your mouth. If you wash hands well and use paper towel to dry (you can avoid sharing a drying towel for a few days), there's NO WAY for you to contract ANYTHING from her.
Also, remember that we go crazy for the 'week-two week' rule but the TRUTH is that MOST people are contagious for 48 hours following the ceasing of symptoms. So, really, it's unlikely that she was still contagious upon arriving home.
You're totally safe and you're going to be just fine! 😘
