So, I went to the dentist today to have a root canal reworked on. I didn't actually intend to have it done today, but a patient had just canceled and so the doc had time.
I went in and right after the numbing shot started to have a bad time. I had to stop twice, and had a full blown panic attack where I thought I was gonna v*. Weird thing was, I wasn't n* at all. I just felt like I was gonna g*g or heave. But that still made me anxious, cause v* usually follows after that.
The last time I went in, they got halfway done before I started feel more anxiety. Then I leaned over and dry heaved twice, but never actually v*. At that point the dentist said he thinks I should stop and be sedated instead. I agreed, and left the dentist with a numb mouth, a feeling of disappointment, and the urge to heave again but no n*
My emetophobia has pretty much bled over into dental phobia as well, and I hate it. It makes me so embarrassed to react like that. And there's also the fact that it cost more to be sedated...
I tried every relaxation technique I could think of (breath through your nose, hold, breath again;wiggling my toes; focusing on a specific object in the room; thinking of something else) but to no avail. It didn't help that I felt like I couldn't swallow and couldn't close my mouth at all, which is usually the cause of the panic.
I just don't know what to do anymore..

I should note that I still feel like heaving even now, and I feel like I might have another panic attack ck and don't know what to do.

I've never had any dental procedures like that so I'm not speaking from experience, but I do have advice to offer and I hope it helps. The dentist does make me anxious when they do cleanings, but it is fast. When you go into the dentist, after you hopefully relax at home to prepare yourself, tell then right from the start that procedures make you dry heave. I know it will cost you but perhaps it is best that they just give it to you from the start to make it easier on you. Also, on the day you're going, eat really lightly so that you don't feel starving but also don't feel like there is anything in you that you could possibly v* out. I've had a great deal of public panic attacks, and they really are horrible and embarrassing. You just have to try putting them behind you. It's horrible that they happen, but you can't help it and you shouldn't beat yourself up over it. Hopefully you won't have another any time soon!

I'm sorry you went through this! I had the same thing once every damn month cos I currently have a brave on! What's worse is the attitude.... Did the dentist's say to you "no no please don't bite, we NEED to finish this!" And carry on regardless? Amazingly I prayed the past two times(got it changed two days ago) and both times I was gagless....When will you go back? Word of advice...One woman doing my teeth tried to help by telling me to make circles with my feet to distract me...IT DOESNT HELP. AT ALL.
It sucks but the way I saw it was "if I'm sick on them I'm sick, it can't much worse than physically gagging so if I V* it's their fault"

I'm pretty terrified of the dentist too. I haven't had to have a root canal but I have had plenty of fillings. One dentist I had told me I needed 9 cavities. I let him perform 4 in one day and then realized that I needed a second opinion. Unfortunately the 4 he did kind of traumatized me. The second opinion doctor said my teeth were in perfect health. Ever since I'm very leery of dentists. My last cleaning I had a full blown panic attack while getting it done. Somehow I hid it well, but when she walked out I had to turn on music on my phone and concentrate on it. When she returned I asked her if I could turn on the tv while she finished. That seemed to help me also. I still panic but it's a lot better when I can concentrate on something.
Do you by chance have antiemetics you can take before hand? That usually helped me when I would freak out. Just knowing that I had already taken one seemed to calm my nerves a little. I'm really sorry you are going through this. đ˘

I get really anxious about the dentist too. What I did before I had my first cavity filled was tell them I get incredibly anxious and asked if I could have nitrous oxide (laughing gas). They don't usually use it for run of the mill procedures, but they did for me because I was so scared. It's not really being sedated, you just won't care about what they're doing! If you're still feeling freaked out after they give you some, see if they'll up it or give it a bit more time. sometimes it takes a bit.
edit: assuming by sedation you weren't referring to laughing gas
